Land-use development

By creating more than 300 direct jobs and pursuing an active purchasing policy with businesses in the Meuse and Haute-Marne departments, Andra plays an active role in the area's development and remains sensitive to the concerns of both local bodies and the communities living near Cigeo.

A number of facilities are already in operation at Cigeo:

  • The underground research laboratory
  • The technological exhibition facility
  • The monitoring stations operated by the Perennial Observatory of the Environment
  • An écothèque (ecological data bank) (opened in 2014)

Cigeo is a vital industrial development project for the community. In all, its construction and operation will span more than 100 years. Between 1,300 and 2,300 jobs will be created during Cigeo's initial construction phase, which will last from 2019 to 2025. Once Cigeo is opened, between 600 and 1,000 people will be employed to run and expand it.

Cigeo will boost the development of local businesses. In addition, as Cigeo is guaranteed to remain in operation for over a century, some companies will most likely decide to set up locally, thus generating new business in the area.

Building an industrial facility requires preparing its host environment. The prefecture of the Meuse department has been appointed by the French Government to coordinate the preparation of an interdepartmental land-use development plan (development of communication infrastructure, housing, training, etc.) in conjunction with government services, local authorities and industry advisory boards (chamber of commerce and industry, chamber of agriculture, chamber of trades). Andra and waste producers are also helping to prepare the plan, which will be presented during the public debate.
